Certain 2006 Model Year Ford Crown Victoria, Grand Marquis and Lincoln Town Car Vehicles - Transmission Oil Cooler Bypass Valve Inspection - Program Expiration Extension


Technical Information

OVERVIEW

This program involves checking the transmission oil cooler (TOC) thermostatic bypass valve. The valve is an integral part of the air conditioning condenser, located at the passenger side lower corner of the condenser and is easily accessed with the vehicle on a hoist. A newly designed special tool will be used to check the bypass valve for proper opening. Do not use any other tool to perform this inspection, as other tools will damage the valve.

INSPECTION

  1. Raise the vehicle on a hoist.
  2. Test the bypass valve as follows:

    Do not use any other tool to perform this inspection, as other tools will damage the valve.
    1. Install the special tool by positioning the post into the plastic stem coming out of the bottom of the TOC bypass valve and placing the flat edge toward the condenser mount. Hold the tool in place with one hand. See Figure 1.

    2. Using large adjustable pliers (with the upper jaw on top of the valve and the lower jaw below the special tool) try compressing the valve using nothing more than a moderate amount of pressure. If the valve is good, the valve will easily compress under this pressure. Using extreme force to try to get the valve to compress is unnecessary. See Figure 2.

      • If the valve compresses, release the pliers. The valve is good. The white plastic ring may have dislodged and be cocked in the valve bore or resting on the top of the special tool. Reinstall the ring, making sure it locks into place above the tangs on the plastic stem. Lower the hoist and release the vehicle. See Figure 3.
      • If the valve does not compress, continue with the next step of this inspection.

  3. Using appropriate diagnostic equipment, check for DTC P1783 (Transmission over temperature condition indicated — Transmission fluid temperature exceeded 127°C [270°F]). See Figure 4.

* The Special Service Support Center will provide approvals and part number information based on the results of your inspection. Transmission oil cooler assemblies must be drained of all oil in preparation for return.
